A shark bit a surfer October 8 in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
Bryan Brock had just finished catching a wave when he was bitten on the right knee.
“As I turned around to grab my board in the whitewater after a wave, I felt the shark circle me and then it nailed me on the kneecap,” Brock told Surfline.
Hurricane Matthew had passed near the area and left the water warmer and much darker than normal.
“There was a fair amount of blood, but it wasn’t too bad,” witness Michael Dunphy said. “[Brock] said the shark hit him so hard it wrapped around him, which is pretty gnarly.”
First responders came to Brock’s aid and treated him on scene before he was transported to the hospital.
The minor wound was treated and Brock was released.
There have been a total of 74 shark attack bites in 2016. Seven of which were fatal; 35 were reported in the US, with 26 occurring in Florida. Fourteen have occurred in Australia, three of which were fatal.
